Well, what everyone warned us about actually happened. Back in the year that I was engaged, several concerned people wished me congratulations, but also warned me that I would change, and that my fiancĂ©, Dillon, would change too. Today, on our fourth wedding anniversary, I can say that all of those concerned voices were right…I have changed, and Dillon has, too. But as I type out this anniversary post, I can say that we’ve changed with a smile on my face. Yes, my life isn’t what I thought it would be, but I’m so glad!
Four years ago, I had no idea if I could be a good teacher, but now I’m putting my degrees and licenses to good use. Four years ago, I had no idea that I would be starting my own photography business–I only had a point and shoot camera! Four years ago, I had no idea that reformer pilates even existed, and now it’s my favorite workout on the planet. Four years ago, I basically choked any time I tried coffee, but now I can down cold brew like a champ (see point 1 where I became a teacher ?).
Four years ago, Dillon had no idea that he would be a director of engineering at his job. Four years ago, Dillon had no idea that he would be a youth group leader. Four years ago, Dillon had no idea that he would turn into a cat person. Four years ago, Dillon had no idea that he would like wearing shorts!
We’ve both grown a lot over the course of four years, both in big and small ways. Our clothing choices, favorite drinks and foods, hobbies, and careers have changed. I’m (the slightest bit) more patient and relaxed. Dillon is more adventurous. We’ve traveled to 9 different countries together, lost family members together, had our financial plans turned upside down together, and encouraged each other to grow together. Yes, we’ve both changed. But looking back, I know that I love him more today than on the day that I said “I do.”
Happy four years, Dillon. I’m praying for many, many more.
