Kristina and Tom know Boston. It’s in their laughter, in their favorite drink, in the way they look at each other across a table just like this.
When they asked for engagement photos that reflected them—their love for each other, and their love for the city—my mind raced with possibilities. As a Boston-based photographer, I’m always thrilled when a couple says “yes” to portraits that feel intentional, elegant, and full of life.
We landed on an evening session at The Newbury Boston (yes, that’s the hotel on Newbury Street in the Back Bay), followed by blue-hour portraits in the nearby charm of Beacon Hill.
At The Street Bar, we captured Kristina and Tom sharing a drink…because that’s them… and then moved outdoors to let the city fade into dusk, letting light and shadows tell the rest of the story.
Because when you’ll only do this once, I believe your images should feel both effortlessly timeless and worthy of being passed down.
Walking into the lobby of The Newbury Boston, you sense you’re somewhere special without even glancing at the details.
Polished floors, warm light, comfortable luxury.
But rather than stand inside, I headed outside the broad bay-window of the hotel’s elegant bar (yes, the one where they share the drink) to capture that in-between moment with the city passing, the magic of the pair just responding to each other.
Inside, Kristina is in a white dress that hints at her upcoming wedding day; Tom in a crisp shirt. Outside, the glass reflects the street-lights and the movement of Boston’s Back Bay. I asked them to raise their glasses, to laugh at something only they know, and to lean in.
The result? A portrait of a couple deeply in love, set in a city they adore.
I’ve shot plenty of Boston engagement sessions, but what makes this one stand out is the mix of indoor ambiance and urban scope.
For couples seeking sophistication and authenticity, it’s the kind of moment I love to deliver.
Here’s where we take a little pause since the setting deserves it. The Newbury Boston isn’t just a pretty backdrop. It’s a landmark in the city’s narrative.
Originally opened in 1927 as the first U.S. hotel to carry the Ritz-Carlton name, the property was designed to bring European sophistication to Boston’s Back Bay.
With its graceful proportions and unmatched views of the Public Garden, it quickly became the social hub of the city’s elite.
During the Great Depression, the hotel’s owners famously kept every guest room light on—even when the rooms were empty—to project hope and stability for the city’s residents passing by. That small act of light became a quiet symbol of perseverance, a reflection of Boston’s enduring spirit.
When the hotel reopened in 2021 after a meticulous three-year renovation, it wasn’t just refreshed; it was reborn.
The Newbury Boston’s official history page shares how the reimagined space honors the building’s original architecture while infusing it with a modern sense of comfort and refinement.
Its signature rooftop restaurant, Contessa, now crowns the hotel with sweeping city views, a nod to the glamour of its early days.
Local publications have celebrated the transformation. Boston.com called the reopening “a new chapter for one of Boston’s most iconic addresses,” while Forbes praised it as “a Boston gem reborn with understated elegance.” Even design outlets like Hospitality Design highlighted how the restoration pays homage to its past while creating spaces that feel current, collected, and timeless.
Today, The Newbury Boston stands as more than a luxury hotel. It’s a love letter to the city’s history and a symbol of enduring style. For couples like Kristina and Tom, it’s a setting that captures both the heritage and heart of Boston itself.
After the warmth of the bar, we slipped out into the twilight of Beacon Hill.
As a Back Bay wedding photographer (and yes, I may say that to help potential clients locate what I do 😂), I often find that transitioning to an outdoor scene around dusk brings a gentle shift: the city relaxes, the light softens, and the couple sees each other differently when the world quiets.
In Beacon Hill’s narrow lanes and gas-lit streets, the kind of blue hour portraits we captured are cinematic without being grandiose.
We walked, we stopped, we let that glow between them do the talking.
For Kristina and Tom it meant a moment away from the planned chaos of wedding logistics, a moment of just “us.” The stone-walkways, the subtle city sounds, the street-lamps flickering on… These moments became as much a character in the photo as they were.
That’s what I aim for: portraits that reflect both the city and the couple. Think structured yet spontaneous, editorial yet accessible.
Let’s pull aside the curtain: if you’re reading this and wondering whether this hotel is worth being your engagement session backdrop (or even your wedding day host), here are the reasons I love it and you might too.
If your sweet-spot is “modern elegance meets classic romance,” The Newbury Boston gives you both.
And as your guide behind the lens, I’ll make sure the images feel like you, not like a generic wedding and engagement stock photos.
Kristina and Tom? They got the Story. They got their moment. And their images? They’ll become part of their family’s legacy.
If you’re dreaming of a session in Boston that feels as timeless as The Newbury Boston itself, where elegance meets emotion, where the city is part of your love story, I would love to help you bring that vision to life.
Ready? Let’s chat. Inquire about your Boston engagement session (whether you’re leaning toward The Newbury, Beacon Hill, or another beloved Back Bay destination).
I’ll help you plan the light, the moment, the memories. You show up. I guide you. You create the hero story.
