Jen and John’s gorgeous Cape Cod maternity photography session couldn’t have been more romantic! The ending of their session might be one of my favorite moments of the entire season! The sun dropped to the perfect spot to create some pretty epic portraits!
Jen and John decided to capture these memories in honor of their first pregnancy, which I absolutely love! Everything changes so quickly when you become parents for the first time. You’ll want to capture every last detail.
And one day, you’ll be able to share these memories with your little one. The investment in these moments will outlive you!
Cape Cod has so many beaches to choose from that the possibilities do actually feel limitless.
Mayflower Beach in Dennis, MA is a classic spot that never disappoints.
There are actual bathrooms–not just portable potties–which is a huge plus while you’re pregnant.
Plus, Mayflower is a big beach, so even though there will be other beachgoers and even portrait sessions happening, there’s plenty of space for everyone!
I highly recommend scheduling Cape Cod maternity photography when you’re between 30 and 34 weeks pregnant.
This way you’ll have a nice round belly, but you’ll still have some energy. Those last few weeks can be exhausting!
You also won’t run the risk of scheduling pictures too close to your due date and then missing out on your session if your little one arrives early.
Of course, this is just a suggestion. If you want to schedule your pictures earlier, you always can! This lovely couple, Jen and John, scheduled their session a bit earlier because they were vacationing at the Cape.
Maternity sessions are a change of pace from engagement and wedding photography, which most couples are now accustomed to.
When it’s your engagement session or wedding day, the emphasis is truly on the couple. And while we still take plenty of couple photos during a maternity session, I always joke with the Dad to be that for this portrait session he’s more of an accessory.
Dads couldn’t be more special and influential in a child’s life, which is why he’s included a ton! But since Mom and baby share pregnancy bond, there will be lots of pictures of mom standing solo, showing off her belly.
When I photography couples and it’s not a maternity session, I try to keep hands away from stomachs. You could be a size -10 and some well-meaning aunt will still ask if a hands-on-the-stomach picture is an announcement of some kind. 🤦♀️
During a maternity session, most images will feature hands on the belly, emphasizing the adorable bundle soon to join the world.
So the posing will feel a bit different. But you’re never left alone to figure out the process. I provide lots of gentle guidance to make sure everyone feels their best!
Like with all of my portrait sessions, I recommend light colors and neutrals!
Super bright colors, while absolutely beautiful in real life, can create color casts. A color cast is when color is reflected back on to your skin.
While our eyes adjust for this in real life, a professional camera picks up on every last detail, and these color casts can show up in the final gallery. So the bright outfits are best reserved for a different day.
I’m always partial to flowy dresses, but you can definitely wear what makes you feel the most comfortable.
All of my clients receive a style guide upon booking to help them plan their outfits. I’m also available to provide feedback if that’s something you desire.
If you’re in need of some shopping suggestions, I always recommend the following:
Lulus’s – They have a bump friendly section
Morning Lavender – They also have a bump friendly section
To Jen and John, thank you so much for trusting me with your maternity session. It’s an honor to capture these memories for you! I’m so excited for you, and I’m cheering for you both!
To everyone else, I can’t wait for you to see this stunning Cape Cod maternity photography session! The sunset really showed off for us!
