Amy and Joe came to Cape Cod with a very specific goal: to bring a place Amy has loved for years into the next chapter of their story for their Mayflower Beach engagement photos.

Although they now live together in California, Amy is originally from Massachusetts and has so many fond memories of visiting the Cape. Joe grew up in Colorado, where they’ll be getting married next year.

Since their wedding will incorporate more of the places and interests closest to him, choosing Cape Cod for their engagement photos gave Amy the chance to share a meaningful piece of her own history.

Their Mayflower Beach engagement photos will also appear on their save-the-dates, connecting the two places that helped shape them as they invite their loved ones to celebrate their marriage. I love how intentional that is.

A Quiet Moment During Their Cape Cod Family Vacation

Amy and Joe planned their session while visiting the Cape with Amy’s extended family at the beginning of July. In the middle of a busy family vacation, they stepped away for an evening that belonged completely to the two of them.

There is something especially sweet about that. Wedding planning comes with so many decisions, calendars, and people to consider. Their engagement session gave them permission to pause all of it for a little while and simply celebrate the fact that they’re getting married.

Amy and Joe both enjoy fitness and being active, so they’re very comfortable moving together. Being comfortable in front of a camera, however, was apparently another story. At least, that’s what they told me.

I remain unconvinced.

Like so many of my couples, they arrived believing they weren’t naturally good at having their photographs taken. Then they spent the evening walking, laughing, holding each other close, and generally providing plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Their final images feel romantic and effortless because their attention wasn’t fixed on performing for the camera. It was on each other.

Predicted Rain for Mayflower Beach Engagement Photos

We had already rescheduled Amy and Joe’s original session after a complete washout. Since their Cape Cod trip was coming to an end, we didn’t have the option to move it again.

So when it started raining during their session, I was watching the sky very carefully.

Thankfully, the rain stayed at a light sprinkle before disappearing completely. And then, as if the weather felt it owed us an apology, the sky gave us the most beautiful sunset I had photographed all season.

Honestly, apology accepted.

Mayflower Beach is known for its wide shoreline and beautiful evening light, but every sunset has its own personality. Amy and Joe’s brought layers of soft color across the sky and water, creating exactly the kind of romantic backdrop they had hoped to bring into their save-the-dates.

After one cancelled date, a little rain, and no remaining room in the schedule, everything came together when it mattered.

Why Mayflower Beach Is Perfect for Cape Cod Engagement Photos

Mayflower Beach in Dennis is one of my favorite locations for Cape Cod engagement photos, especially for couples drawn to open shoreline and colorful sunsets. When the tide is low, the beach seems to stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

That extra space gives couples room to walk, move, and enjoy the experience without every photograph feeling overly posed.

It also photographs beautifully during the height of summer. Even on a busy July evening, carefully choosing our timing and where we worked allowed Amy and Joe’s session to feel quiet and personal.

But the real beauty of their Mayflower Beach engagement session wasn’t simply the location or even that spectacular sky. It was the meaning underneath it. These photographs allowed Amy to carry a piece of Cape Cod into a Colorado wedding while giving both of them a record of this brief, expectant season before marriage.

Amy and Joe, thank you for trusting me through the rescheduling, the uncertain forecast, and those first few moments of feeling nervous in front of the camera. You were wonderful together, exactly as I suspected you would be.
